Glass Percussion Workshop with Brendan Murphy.

[24th January 2017]

Leading percussionist Brendan Murphy from Tyneside visited Butterflies on Tuesday 24th January 2017. No stranger to Hull, Brendan is a member of the Spark drummers ensemble, which wowed Hull crowds with electrifying street performances at Freedom Festival 2015.

The Butterflies group engaged in a day-long workshop with Brendan to explore and create soundscapes to be used as a backdrop to their City of Culture community project - The Butterfly Effect.

Using a wide range of glass percussion instruments the group worked together to create their first ambient soundscape. Four glass bars, placed in an order suggested by group member Pat, set the tone for this first piece. Other members of the group then added further incidental glass sounds to complete the piece, which they have called 'Pat's Order' - listen to it below!

Brendan will be returning in May, when the group will take their explorations in sound further.
